WHAT TO KNOW TO GET STARTED

SOIL

If you haven't heard me say it before, I'll say it here: Soil is the KEY to success when growing, well, anything! Aside from making sure your soil has proper nutrients, you must also be sure it drains well after water is applied or when it rains.

SEEDS VS. PLANTS

The trick to deciding whether to use seeds or plants - knowing how many days are needed before you can harvest your veggies!

WATER

Consistent moisture levels in your soil will help your vegetable plants to flourish!

LIGHT

The majority of veggies and fruits will perform best with at least 8 hours of sunlight each day. Sunlight is needed for plants to create the energy they need to live. Rest assured, there is a small list of veggies that will grow with fewer hours of sunshine, but even these would like at least 4 hours!

TEMPERATURE

Average air and soil temperatures where you live will determine when you will be able to successfully grow a vegetable garden. If you live where snow falls, the ideal months for growing outdoors will be May - September. If you live where summer temperatures often exceed 90 degrees F, the ideal months for growing will be October - April.
